Why Knowing Your Water Heater's Age Matters

The single most useful piece of information about a water heater is its manufacturing date. It tells you roughly how much life is left in the unit, whether you're still inside the warranty window, and how urgently you should start planning a replacement. Most tank water heaters last 8 to 12 years, so once you know the age, you know where you stand.

Manufacturers don't print the date in plain text. Instead, it's encoded inside the serial number, and every brand uses its own format. That's why a stamped serial like RHC1518 isn't obviously a date until you know that Rheem uses week and year as the first four digits. This tool handles the decoding for all 32 supported brands so you don't have to look it up.

Common reasons people check their water heater's age: planning a proactive replacement before a leak, verifying warranty coverage with the manufacturer, evaluating a home before purchase, filing an insurance claim, or just deciding whether a repair is worth the cost on an aging unit.

How the Age Checker Works

Three quick steps. No account, no email, free.

  1. 1. Select your brand

Pick from 32 supported brands. Each one uses a different date-encoding format, so the brand tells the decoder which rules to apply.

  2. 2. Enter the serial number

Type the serial from the rating plate, or snap a photo of the label and we'll extract it automatically.

  3. 3. Get the manufacturing date

We decode the month and year, calculate the age, and show warranty context plus replacement recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do water heaters last?+

Most tank-style water heaters last 8 to 12 years. Tankless units typically last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. Lifespan depends on water quality, how often the tank is flushed, and whether the anode rod is replaced on schedule. If your heater is past 10 years and showing any warning signs, it's smart to start planning a replacement before it fails.

How do I find my water heater's serial number?+

The serial number is printed on the manufacturer's rating plate, a metal or sticker label attached to the side of the tank. On most tank heaters it's near the top, close to the cold water inlet. On tankless units, check the front panel or the bottom of the unit. The serial number is different from the model number and is usually a longer alphanumeric code.

Where is the manufacturing date on a water heater?+

The manufacturing date is encoded inside the serial number itself, not printed separately. Each brand uses a different format. Rheem and Ruud use the first four digits as week and year. A.O. Smith uses two letters at the start to encode year and month. Bradford White uses a single letter for year plus a letter for month. Our tool decodes the format automatically once you select the brand.

Why doesn't my serial number match any pattern?+

A few common reasons: the brand on the label is actually made by a parent company (for example, Kenmore and Whirlpool are made by A.O. Smith or Rheem), the serial was mistyped, or the unit is older than the current dating system. If our checker can't decode it, it will suggest the most likely parent brand to try, or you can submit the serial through our debug portal and we'll investigate.

Is my water heater still under warranty?+

Most residential tank water heater warranties run 6, 9, or 12 years from the manufacturing date, depending on the model and warranty tier. Tankless units usually carry a 10 to 15 year heat exchanger warranty. The manufacturing date you get from this tool is the starting point. Check your specific model's warranty terms with the manufacturer using the serial number.

How accurate is this water heater age checker?+

The tool uses the official date-encoding scheme published or reverse-engineered for each of the 32 brands we support. For brands like Rheem, A.O. Smith, Bradford White, and Bosch, decoding is accurate to the month or week of manufacture. For a few older or rebranded units, accuracy is to the year. Brand-specific notes are shown with every result.

Should I replace my water heater based on age alone?+

Age is the biggest single predictor of failure, but not the only one. If your unit is over 10 years old AND showing symptoms (rusty water, popping noises, leaks around the base, longer recovery time, or rising energy bills), replacement is usually the better call. A unit that's 8 years old and running fine can keep going, but it's worth budgeting for the next one.

Does the serial number tell me the model or capacity?+

No. The serial number encodes the manufacturing date and a unique unit identifier. Capacity, fuel type, BTU rating, and efficiency come from the model number, which is a separate code on the same rating plate. If you enter both serial and model into our checker, we'll decode the date from the serial and pull specs from our model database when available.
