About Hotpoint Water Heaters
Hotpoint water heaters are built by Rheem. The name dates to 1911 and came under General Electric in 1918, and GE Appliances, which licenses it, has been owned by Haier since 2016, but none of those companies built the tank. It is a Rheem product with a Hotpoint label, which is exactly why the serial reads like a Rheem serial.
The line is plain by design: gas and electric tanks, mostly 30 to 50 gallons, atmospheric venting on the gas side, two elements on the electric side, glass lined tanks with magnesium anodes. It was sold through Home Depot and aimed at rental properties and straightforward replacements rather than at feature buyers. Recovery rates were published for these models but burner input often was not, so a missing BTU figure is a gap in the original literature.
For parts, look up the Rheem equivalent by capacity, fuel, and vent type rather than searching the Hotpoint number. The serial is Rheem MMYY: two digits for the month, two for the year, sometimes behind a short letter prefix identifying the plant, so a serial reading 0619 is June 2019. A smaller number of units use the other Rheem layout instead, a plant letter followed by the two digit year and a letter for the month.

Hotpoint water heaters were discontinued along with the broader GE exit from the water heater business in 2016. Any unit in service today is at least 10 years old and approaching end of typical service life. Original warranties have long since expired and replacement is overwhelmingly the right move at this age.
