About Noritz Water Heaters
Noritz water heaters represent Japanese engineering excellence in tankless water heating technology. Founded in 1951 in Kobe, Japan, Noritz Corporation has grown to become one of the world's largest manufacturers of tankless water heaters and boilers. The company entered the North American market in the 1990s and has established a strong reputation for reliable, energy-efficient on-demand water heating solutions among professional contractors and homeowners.
Noritz manufactures condensing and non-condensing tankless water heaters for residential and light commercial applications. Their EZ series offers affordable entry-level tankless performance, while the NRC condensing series achieves efficiency ratings up to 0.97 UEF. The NRCB combi-boilers provide both space heating and domestic hot water from a single unit. Noritz backs its products with up to 12-year heat exchanger warranties. Serial numbers use a YYYY.MM-SERIAL format where the first four digits indicate the year and the next two digits indicate the month of manufacture.
Where to find the serial
Noritz tankless units have the rating plate on the right side of the cabinet, with the serial printed in a black bordered box. The serial leads with the year in four digits, which makes Noritz one of the easier brands to age at a glance.
What the serial actually looks like
Why the age is worth knowing
Noritz condensing residential tankless (NRC series) carry a 12-year heat exchanger warranty, while the EZ direct-tank-replacement series carries an extended 25-year heat exchanger warranty -- both are condensing units. Commercial NCC and NC units carry about 10 years, and legacy non-condensing NR units carry 12 years. Noritz warranties are not transferable (original owner only), so coverage does not carry over when a home is sold. Annual descaling is required to maintain warranty if your hardness exceeds 7 grains per gallon - skip it and warranty claims will be denied.
Quick answers for this brand
How do I know if my Noritz needs descaling?
If you notice longer warmup times, fluctuating outlet temperatures, or any error codes in the 7x range, scale buildup is likely. Noritz recommends annual descaling as a baseline, more often on water above 10 grains hardness. Use the built-in service valves with a small pump and vinegar or commercial descaler.
Are Noritz parts hard to get?
No, Noritz maintains good parts availability through their North American distribution network in Fountain Valley CA. Most common parts (igniters, flame rods, gas valves, fans) ship same or next day from a Noritz authorized service partner. The heat exchanger itself is expensive enough that replacement is usually preferred at year 10+.
What's the difference between an NRC and an NRCB Noritz?
NRC is a tankless water heater only, while NRCB is a combination boiler that provides both domestic hot water and space heating through a hydronic loop. The NRCB is larger and more expensive but eliminates the need for a separate boiler. Both decode age the same way from the YYYY.MM serial format.
Is my Noritz a water heater or a boiler?
Check the model prefix. EZ and NRC units are condensing tankless water heaters, and the legacy NR units are older non-condensing tankless water heaters -- all of these make hot water. NCC and NC units are commercial condensing tankless water heaters for high-demand buildings. NH units (such as NH150-DV) are ASME space-heating boilers and are NOT water heaters, even though they share Noritz's serial date format. Every one of them decodes age the same way -- the first four digits of the serial are the year and the next two are the month.
