About State Water Heaters
State Industries started in Ashland City, Tennessee in 1946 and became part of A.O. Smith in 2001. It sells through plumbing wholesalers rather than retail, and its plants also produce the tanks badged as Reliance and the Maytag branded water heaters from the Series Nine era, which is why a Maytag model number resolves to State specifications.
The range runs wider than most residential brands, from 2.5 gallon point of use units up to 120 gallon commercial tanks, in gas, electric, power vent, and heat pump configurations. ProLine and ProLine XE are the residential families; Sandblaster is the commercial line built for continuous duty. Two details make State plates easier to read. First, the serial format changed: modern units start with the two digit year and the production week, so 1024123456 is week 24 of 2010, while units built before mid 2004 used letter codes, either a factory letter followed by a month letter, or a month letter followed by the year. Second, the three digit number printed after the model number is a parts revision code, not a variant, so a trailing 300 or 400 does not describe a different tank and can be ignored when matching specifications.

State residential tanks typically come with 6, 9, or 12 year tank warranties. Commercial Sandblaster units have shorter coverage but the heavier construction often lasts well past warranty. After year 8 on a residential unit, the anode rod is usually fully consumed and the tank is on borrowed time.
