Bock Water Heaters builds in two Wisconsin plants, is 100 percent employee owned, and was acquired by Bradford White. It sells through plumbing wholesalers and mechanical contractors rather than retail, and it is specified by building engineers for apartment buildings, dormitories, and light industrial sites where an early failure costs more than the equipment did.
Oil is what Bock is known for. The oil fired line runs from roughly 104,000 to 623,000 BTU and 32 to 113 gallons, and the 32E is the model most often found in a New England basement next to an oil burner. Bock also builds gas fired and electric commercial tanks, including the ElectriTHERM series, in storage and high recovery configurations. Construction is heavier than residential grade throughout: thick glass lining, oversized anode protection, and commercial relief valves, which is where the longer service lives come from.
The serial is refreshingly plain. The first two digits are the year and the third and fourth are the month, so a serial beginning 9701 is January 1997. No letter chart, no plant code to strip, and the format has held across the product line.
