About Vaughn Water Heaters

Vaughn Thermal Corporation has been building water heaters in Massachusetts since 1961, from Salisbury on the New Hampshire line. It stayed independent in an industry that consolidated into two large groups, and it competes by building what the volume manufacturers do not.

The defining choice is the tank lining. Vaughn HydraStone tanks are lined with thick cement rather than glass, and Featherweight tanks are molded thermoplastic. Neither lining needs a sacrificial anode rod, so there is no anode to inspect or replace, which removes the maintenance item owners skip most often. The catalog is electric, indirect fired from a boiler, solar storage, and heat pump, roughly 30 to 120 gallons. Vaughn does not build gas fired water heaters, so a gas plate is not a Vaughn plate no matter what the label says.

Warranty is written by application rather than by model, with different residential, commercial, and solar terms on the same tank, so how the unit was installed determines the coverage. The serial is a plain date code: two digits for the month, two for the year, then the sequence, so 0612123456 is June 2012.

Where to find the serial

Vaughn water heaters are commercial-grade electric and indirect units - Vaughn makes no gas-fired products at all. The rating plate is a metal tag bolted to the side of the tank, not a sticker. The serial is stamped or engraved and starts with the date in MMYY order: month first, then year.

What the serial actually looks like

098600840P
Month 09 (September), year 86 (1986), so September 1986. Vaughn puts the month first and the year second - the reverse of the YYWW codes most tank brands use.

Why the age is worth knowing

Vaughn tanks (the HydraStone cement-lined steel and Featherweight thermoplastic lines) are heavy-duty units with expected service lives of 20+ years when properly maintained. The HydraStone lining means no anode rod is needed - there's no sacrificial corrosion system to maintain. On indirect models, the heat exchanger coil is the part most likely to need attention long-term.

Quick answers for this brand

What's an indirect water heater and why does Vaughn make them?

An indirect water heater uses a coil heat exchanger inside the tank to extract heat from a separate boiler rather than heating water directly. This means the water heater is essentially a thermal battery powered by your boiler. Vaughn specializes in these because they pair well with high-efficiency hydronic heating systems for whole-home performance.

How long should a Vaughn water heater last?

Vaughn units routinely run 20-25 years in service with treated water. The HydraStone cement lining protects the steel tank from the corrosion failures that kill standard tanks - and eliminates the need for an anode rod - so the practical limits are usually the coil heat exchanger or insulation degradation rather than tank failure.

Where do I get Vaughn parts?

Vaughn has built water heaters in Massachusetts since 1961 and supports parts directly through their factory and a network of plumbing wholesalers. Their parts availability for older units is quite good - they understand that commercial customers expect long-term support. Call the factory tech line for assistance with older models.
